The Swatcha Ganga Campaign of the Sankat Mochan Foundation (SMF) is the only case in India where there has been prolonged and active involvement of civil society in a campaign to clean a river. The Clean Ganges Campaign has implemented a wide range of strategies including mobilising public attention to the problems, environmental education, village water supply programs, removing solid waste from Ganga water along the ghats and designing effective sewage treatment systems to solve the problem.
